For the past two years, the Netherlands‟ pension system has been ranked top of the Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index. The index attempts to provide a balanced and objective comparison of the retirement income systems in fourteen countries spread across the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific.
Despite being judged to be the best pension system in the world, the Dutch system is far from perfect (something the Index recognizes, as no system is awarded an „A‟ grade). In particular, the index notes that Dutch system in its present form is not sustainable. As a result of the financial and economic crises, low interest rates, an ageing population and increasing life expectancy, the Dutch pensions system is experiencing pressure like never before.
